With most of their landscape covered by buildings, parking lots, and roadways, cities make themselves vulnerable to certain climate conditions. For example, with such a high concentration of metal and concrete, cities capture heat and experience higher temperatures than nearby areas, a phenomenon called heat island effect. Similarly, with so much space covered by water-resistant surfaces, urban environments rely heavily on drainage systems to control stormwater, making them susceptible to flooding.

By counterbalancing heat island effect and absorbing run-off as well as contributing environmental and aesthetically pleasing elements to otherwise unusable spaces, green roofs are a rapidly growing solution to these problems. With over 30 years of experience in landscaped and “green” roofing structures, CETCO has come up with a green roof technology—GreenScapes^®. GreenScapes Greenroof assemblies combine the performance of our proven waterproofing systems along with membranes, drainage, growing media, and plants, all in the convenience of one source.

CETCO offers two different kinds of GreenScapes Greenroofs. Designed to be lightweight and support plants tolerant of drought conditions, Extensive GreenScapes Greenroof designs are considered low maintenance with no irrigation required in most climates. This shallow growing media option is typically used to mitigate the effects of the urban heat island phenomenon and reduce stormwater runoff.

Intensive GreenScapes Greenroof designs have increased growing media depths and therefore look like traditional roof gardens since they can host a wider variety of plants. They are designed to be accessible for recreational use as well as add green space for visual pleasure. Hardscape elements such as pavers, benches and water features can also be integrated.
